Earl Lancaster

Master Barber/ Owner

Earl Lancaster has been cutting hair in Seattle’s Central District for over 30 years, carrying on a legacy that stretches back to the first black-owned barbershop established in the 1890s. Born and raised in the neighborhood, Earl opened Earl’s Cut & Styles in 1992, making it one of the oldest continuously operating African American barbershops in Seattle. Now 55, Earl has become a fixture in the community, known as the “Unofficial Mayor of the Central District” due to his decades of service.

Located near the original barbershop site founded at 23rd and East Union, Earl connects to the rich history of black-owned barbershops that have long served as hubs for culture and conversation. But Earl does more than just provide great haircuts. He gives back by donating his time to local charities and nonprofit groups. His warm and welcoming shop has attracted celebrity clients ranging from baseball and basketball stars to music legends, actors, politicians, and more.

Through the ups and downs of the neighborhood, Earl has kept his doors open, providing a reliable gathering place and tonsorial services with a personal touch. His longstanding commitment and generosity have made him a beloved community leader. Now in his 30+ years of business, Earl Lancaster continues to exemplify the entrepreneurial spirit that inspires future generations. Earl’s lifelong service shows how small businesses can anchor a community when owned by people who care about more than just making a buck.

Earl and The Glove

Meet Earl and learn about his voyage to becoming Seattle’s Premiere Barber.

In 1992, Earl Lancaster- a Seattle native- opened Earl’s Cuts & Styles on 23rd & Union, located in the Central District of Seattle. For three decades, Earl’s Cuts & Styles has earned a reputation for providing outstanding customer service, professional barbering, and an communitical atmosphere. Earl’s Cuts & Styles, also referred to as “Earl’s” by local Seattleites, has become a landmark in the community and has managed to service various generations.

Owner, Earl Lancaster, began barbering in the early 1980’s. Lancaster was trained under the craftsmanship of long-time barber Gary Ladd. After discovering his own ‘style’ and technique, Lancaster established Earl’s Cuts & Styles. Lancaster’s diverse and established clientele can be attributed to his unwavering compassion and tireless dedication. Many can attest that Earl’s Cuts & Style is not your typical barbershop. Lancaster has upheld the trust of the community and continues to represent the historical cultural values of the Central District: community, care, and legacy.

Throughout the years, Lancaster has helped train and hone the skills of various talented barbers. Through his mentorship, these barbers have established their own salons. Moreover, Lancaster is, as we like to say in the Central District, one of the “Godfathers” of barbering in the Pacific Northwest.

With the drastic renovations and culture shift in Seattle over the last decade, Lancaster and his team of barbers intentions remains the same; they are committed to assuring a pleasurable service when at Earl’s Cut & Style. Although it is known that Lancaster values his reputation, he honors his craft and service above all! Lancaster’s motto is “consistency brings results”. With that being said, feel free to stop by his new location… always located on 23rd & Union.
